Philipp Stölzl’s (Goethe!, North Face) light-hearted and off-beat film adaptation of Germany’s wildly successful stage musical brings the music of Udo Jürgens to the big screen. For self-centered Talk Show host, Lisa (Heike Makatsch), her show means everything. When her mother, Maria (Katharina Thalbach), lands in a hospital following an accident, Maria can only remember one thing: she had never been to New York! Without further ado, Maria flees the hospital and boards a cruise ship headed to New York as a stowaway. With her make-up Artist, Fred (Michael Ostrowski), in tow, Lisa catches up with Maria, only to be stuck on the ship as it sets sail. As the three stowaways try to make the best of the situation, they each meet an unexpected stranger: Lisa meets Axel (Moritz Bleibtreu), who is far from her type; Maria meets the aging Gigolo, Otto (Uwe Ochsenknecht), and Fred falls for Costa, the ship’s magician. What ensues is a colorful, syrupy-sweet sing-along voyage across the Atlantic and into the uncharted waters of memory and love.
