Director of Administration

The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. We convey a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about cultural, social and political life in our nation. Our cultural and educational programs encourage intercultural dialogue and enable cultural involvement. They strengthen the development of structures in civil society and foster worldwide mobility.

To support our team in New York, we are looking for a full-time Director of Administration (40 hours/week) to start january 1, 2019.

Responsibilities:
  • General Administration and Accounting
    • Business organization
    • Budget planning and oversight, year-end and half-year financial statements
    • Financial and payroll accounting
    • Payments and cash management
    • Property management, including contract negotiations with vendors and contractors of the institute
    • Purchasing and administration of inventory 
  • Personnel Management
    • Giving out duties to administration and facility staff
    • Management of absences and vacation database 
  • Events
    • Assisting the preparations for and execution of institute events 
Requirements:
  • Degree in business administration and several years’ experience in similar positions
  • Leadership experience and good interpersonal skills
  • High proficiency in MS-Office Software (esp. Excel)
  • High proficiency in SAP (FI-CO, BI) software or willingness to learn
  • Very good work planning and negotiation skills
  • Good knowledge of US labor, social, and contract law
  • Knowledge of the corresponding procedures in the Federal Republic of Germany (budgeting, vacation, travel costs, etc.) or willingness to acquire this knowledge
  • Preparedness to become thoroughly and comprehensively familiar with the planning and regulatory systems and procedures of the Goethe-Institut
  • Very good language and writing skills in both German and English
  • Valid work permit for the USA 
Other:
  • Full-time position
  • Compensation for the position around $73,000 per annum and also includes an attractive benefits package
