Archtober, New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, took place for the first time in October 2011, and is going into its fifth year. The Building of the Day tour program supports the Archtober goal of making quality architecture accessible to the public, and encouraging the public to engage in New York City’s great built environment every day of the month. Each year the special impact of hearing from the architect from within the space becomes more apparent.

KARO ARCHITECTS, are the architects for the Goethe-Institut New York's new build-out at 30 Irving Place. They will lead a one-hour tour through the building.
Since March 2015 the Goethe-Institut New York is located at 30 Irving Place, one block from Union Square. The Goethe-Institut’s new home is in an existing office building built in 1912 by Central Realty Company after plans of Harry B. Mulliken (student of Flatiron-Building-Architect Daniel Burnham) and Edgar J. Moeller. The new design by KARO ARCHITECTS has an open walk-in space that combines all parts of the Goethe-Institut’s cultural work and functions as a bridge between the institute and its public: a versatile space with high-end technical equipment for different formats such as talks, performances, film screenings, installations, and exhibitions, a library with custom made convertible shelves, and an open reading area for passers-by. The fourth floor of the building combines working and learning in a full floor gut renovation: next to the light filled open office space are four classrooms and a teachers’ and entry lounge.
Sebastian Kaempf and
Anke Roggenbuck founded KARO in 2014. Their collaboration began 10 years earlier at 1100 Architects, where they teamed up on residential and commercial interiors as well as ground-up construction in the public and private realm. Sebastian and Anke have extensive architectural experience, with inter-disciplinary studies in Germany (Bauhaus), Great Britain (Bartlett), and the United States (SciArc).
