Image & Bias Finalists Illustration: Goethe-Institut San Francisco

On July 2, join Goethe-Institut, Gray Area, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and Artivive for a presentation, panel discussion, and virtual gallery launch with the finalists of the global open call Visualizing Bias with Augmented Reality.

From March 1 through May 23, 2021, we invited artists, designers, and the general public to submit creative representations on the subject of bias and technology’s growing ability to alter people’s visual perception of reality, and we hosted 5 global Augmented Reality workshops across the US, Canada, and China.
Submissions explored discriminatory, misrepresentational, and biased apparatuses and expressed thought-provoking ideas on how to deal with the perpetuation of bias by technology.

An international jury comprised of artists, curators, and researchers had the difficult task of selecting the ten best designs from over 150 submissions. The 3 finalists amongst the 10 selected projects will present their respective works and take part in a panel discussion. The event will also celebrate the launch of a virtual gallery presenting the following selected artists and works:

Finalists:
  • Caitlin & Misha (the artist duo, aka Caitlin Foley and Misha Rabinovich/USA): Ecology of Worries
  • Adam Szklenar (Hungary): Filtered Views
  • Arman Paxad (Canada/Iran): White Shade
Selected Projects:
  • Avital Meshi (Israel): Deconstructing Whiteness
  • Craig Tilley (USA): Decoding Babel
  • Aurora Micale and Chiara Palmucci (Italy): Incel
  • Alireza Vaziri Rahimi (Iran): The Covid-19 Infodemic
  • Ilaria Trapani, Marco Manco (Italy): 8 WAVE
  • Nirav Beni (South Africa): Gradation Descent
  • Daniele Silvestri (Italy): Fronzoni
The event is part of the project IMAGE + BIAS that critically engages with the cultural realities being increasingly determined by imperceptible technologies.
