Karl Marx would have celebrated his 200th birthday in 2018. His criticism of capitalism appears even more pertinent today amidst climate crisis, chronical unemployment and global inequality. The Goethe-Institut San Francisco invites cartoon artists to submit work based on the character of Karl Marx. Cartoon artists are encouraged to design a humorous original cartoon inspired by Marx and his widely known theories. A jury will select three artists from the entries.

Conditions of Participation:

Individual artists may submit up to three works. Please submit your artwork as a data file with a resolution of 300 dpi (black and white or color.)

The final date for submissions is July 15th 2018.

Submissions should be sent to:
Subject line “MARX NOW Cartoon Competition”

A jury will select the best three works of three artists:

1st prize is a language study trip to Germany
2nd prize is a $250 coupon for art supplies
3rd prize is a selection of cartoon art-books

The top selections will be displayed in an exhibition at the ART-Lounge of the Goethe-Institut San Francisco in October, as part of the MARX NOW event series. Other exhibitions might follow.

Through their participation the cartoonists agree to grant Goethe-Institut San Francisco the rights to the publication of their work in the exhibition, in print materials and social media for use in public relations.
