Queer as German Folk Noon Film Series

Through portraits of some of San Francisco's leading gender mixers Gendernauts allows us an illuminating and compassionate look at the world of transgender identity. Whether by birth or by choice, sometimes with the assistance of hormones or surgical prostheses, we meet those who blur the lines of male and female.

Director Monika Treut describes herself as a lesbian German filmmaker. She attended high school at an all-girls state school and then studied German and Political Science. The title of her PhD thesis was The Cruel Woman: Female Images in the Writing of Marquis de Sade and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Treut graduated in 1978 and earned her doctorate degree in philology from the University of Marburg. That same year she founded Hyena Filmproduktion together with Elfi Mikesch, and began producing, writing, and directing independent feature films.
