With inspirations from North Rhine-Westphalia

ARTINA 2016: Art in Nature is a sculpture exhibition which emerged from a transatlantic dialogue between the curators, Artemis Herber and Martine Van Kampen.

Artemis Herber (Baltimore) was a guest of the North Rhine-Westphalia Culture Secretariat in 2015. She explored significant sculpture parks in North Rhine-Westphalia, including the Cologne Sculpture Park, Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden, the Island Hombroich, Raketenstation Neuss, Moyland Castle, and Sinneswald.

During the study tour, she met renowned art historian Martine Van Kampen (Netherlands), curator of the Land Art Live, a series of programs and performances that take place at the six major Land Art works in the province of Flevoland. Van Kampen also works for TAAK, a cultural cooperative with a focus on artistic and educational projects related to social and environmental issues.

In cooperation with the Sandy Spring Museum, eleven American artists of the Washington Sculptors Group participate in this group exhibition, bringing art and landscape into a dialogue in the museum’s rustic grounds and throughout the adjacent woods. The exhibition invites the audience to engage in issues of sustainability, participation, and performance.

Among the group is German artist Vanessa Niederstrasser (b. 1971 Wuppertal), who studied Architecture at the University of Wuppertal and Architectural Arts with Laurids Ortner, followed by Fine Arts with Irmin Kamp at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. She has been living and working close to San Francisco, California for five years.

Additional artists: Allan Arp, c.l. bigelow, Jeff Chyatte, Eve Hennessa, Jin Lee, Darcy Meeker, Salvatore Pirrone, Mike Shaffer, Diane Szczepaniak, Fabiola Alvarez Yurcisin

Presented by the Washington Sculptors Group (WSG) and Sandy Spring Museum (SSM)
