Integrating innovative light-art with classic architecture to celebrate German-American heritage and friendship in Indianapolis

In honor of Indianapolis’s strong German-American roots, German artist collective URBANSCREEN will illuminate the Athenæum in Indianapolis with images of influential German-American personalities — including Marlene Dietrich, Albert Einstein, and Kurt Vonnegut. “German Influencers” is one of three installations comprising “Light-Art Meets German Architecture,” a public art event series that will kick off the Year of German-American Friendship.

With “German Influencers,” Bremen-based artist collective URBANSCREEN’s inventive way of combining storytelling with digital artwork stages an experience that distinctively evokes the stories and accomplishments of remarkable German-American lives. This focus on German-American heritage ties in especially well with the Athenæum’s history, as it was formerly known as the Deutsches Haus — a place of social gathering for German-Americans in Indianapolis, and a homebase for many German-American organizations throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

The lively neighborhood around the Athenæum will play a central role in the celebration, with Bavarian-style restaurant The Rathskeller taking part in the festivities.

The series "Light-Art Meets German Architecture" continues with “Overtures and Wanderwort Poetry” in Washington, D.C. on October 3 (event by invitation only) and “Spotlight Bauhaus” in Atlanta on October 5.

This event is organized by the Goethe-Institut as part of the initiative “Year of German-American Friendship” — encompassed by the motto #WunderbarTogether —  in 2018/19. A heartfelt thank you goes to the local partners, especially the Athenæum and Indianapolis Arts Council.
