Goethe-Institut Washington

For one week, the Goethe-Institut Washington will host Halcyon Arts Lab Fellow Mengxi "Althea" Rao as she exhibits her project Pillar of Salt, an interactive light sculpture that encourages collaboration from visitors and passersby.

Pillar of Salt is an attempt to solicit commitments from individuals to consider power redistribution and support a future of equal opportunity for women.

The main physical medium of this project is light sculpture; the construction of which is a process of laminating hundreds of small strips of paper onto a wooden frame to form a translucent hard shell. Individual participants will be invited to write down their commitments of taking action to improve the gender culture, and the paper strips will become the construction material of the light sculpture.

This engagement is a part of our #FeminismToMe hashtag campaign. With this hashtag, we are collecting personal definitions of feminism on Instagram. The social media campaign is the overarching theme of a series of events, in which we give different voices of the feminist movement a platform at Goethe-Institut Washington.
