Manifesto features two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett performing thirteen distinct roles in vignettes that incorporate timeless manifestos from twentieth-century art movements. From anchorwoman to punk, from CEO to homeless man, Blanchett executes a chameleonic tour de force, voicing Rosefeldt’s interweaving of history’s most impassioned artistic statements, from Futurism to Pop art to Dogma 95, in this stunning contemporary call to action.
Manifesto draws on the writings of Dadaists, Fluxus artists, Suprematists, Situationists, and other artist groups, as well as the musings of individual artists, architects, dancers, and filmmakers. Edited and reassembled by Rosefeldt, these groundbreaking manifestos have become thirteen brilliant collages that merge the ideas of Claes Oldenburg, Yvonne Rainer, Kazimir Malevich, André Breton, Elaine Sturtevant, Sol LeWitt, Jim Jarmusch, and many more. Blanchett performs these “new” manifestos in the voices of thirteen contemporary personas ranging from schoolteacher to factory worker to puppeteer, her performance paying homage to the tradition of artistic manifestos while imbuing vibrant and dramatic new life into their text.
While
Manifesto premiered originally as a thirteen-channel installation, the feature film offers a different perspective on the flow of language and Blanchett’s myriad embodiments of these manifestos, a unique tour of modern artistic thinking that itself becomes an embodiment of the twentieth century.
