United Nations Association Film Festival

The 23rd UNAFF (United Nations Association Film Festival) will be held online from October 15-25. It celebrates THE POWER OF EMPATHY through documentary films that highlight human rights issues, including environmentalism, racism, health, women’s issues, universal education, war and peace. We would like to highlight three German documentaries presented at this year's UNAFF:

THE FORUM
(92 min) Germany/Switzerland
Director: Marcus Vetter
Producer: Christian Beetz
For the first time in the 50-year history of the World Economic Forum, an independent film team was able to shoot behind closed doors. As the world stands at crossroads, they document the most powerful people on the planet taking decisions that will affect us all.

THE LESSON
(60 min) Germany
Director/Producer: Elena Horn
The Lesson follows four children through their experience of learning about the Holocaust in a German state school. Filmed over five years during 2014-2019, the film touches upon important social and political issues including the resurgence of the far-right, xenophobia, the fractured, disparate collective memory of National Socialism, and the surprising lack of intimate knowledge of the younger generations on the subject.

BUREAU 39 -- KIM’S CASH MACHINE
(58 min) Germany/North Korea/Netherlands/US
Directors: Sebastian Weis, Carl Gierstorfer, Lukas Augustin
Producer: Tristan Chytroschek
North Korea is boxing far above its weight. How is it possible that one of the poorest countries on earth finances a nuclear weapons program large enough to challenge the USA? The answer: Bureau 39, a legendary organization nestled deep inside the government apparatus. Its aim: to procure foreign exchange by any means possible to provide Kim Jong-un's regime with money.
