The Green Academy offers exciting scientific experiments and philosophical discussions

The Green Academy offers children and young adults the opportunity to engage in German within these areas: scientific experiments, philosophy and sustainability. Each month, the Green Academy offers several 45-minute digital and interactive video lectures free of charge. Students aged 8-14 years can participate in fun online sessions which will be held from October to December 2020 in the Digital WanderbUS of the Goethe-Institut.

The sessions will feature a variety of topics, for example fascinating scientific experiments – of which several can be tried at home. They provide impulses for pondering about scientific phenomena. Students will acquire new perceptions on the world while simultaneously enhancing their German language skills.

The first lecture will be presented by the beloved TV personality Christoph Biemann (from “Die Sendung mit der Maus”) with a promising headline: “A Great Greek Discovery” on 29 October at 12:30 PM (EDT). Among other scientific explorations, Biemann will demonstrate how to generate electrical charges with a balloon and scraps of paper. Or how and when an egg swims – in tap water or salt water? Do you know?

In November, Ana Laura Edelhoff will prompt children to discuss fundamental aspects of philosophy that are relevant in our daily lives (age group: 11-14 years). The discussions will include fascinating aspects of philosophy, from questions about societal justice to emotional truths. From a language standpoint, this session will be on a slightly higher level and participants will be encouraged to think for themselves and practice expressing their thoughts in German. The event will also take place in the Digital WanderbUS.

Language level is A1 to A2. The Goethe-Institut will provide materials for (online) courses after event conclusion.
RSVP Places are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. Due to high demand, it is recommended to register immediately. We encourage teachers to sign up with their class(es) but also provide spots to individual students and parents. The virtual lectures are held via Zoom meetings to which participants will receive access codes.

Christoph Biemann is a German writer, director and producer and one of the presenters of the award-winning children's television show, "Die Sendung mit der Maus". Also known as "Die Maus" ("The Mouse"), it has been on air since 1971; Biemann joined the show in 1972. He has his own production company and has won numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Although he produces many film shorts for "The Mouse", he doesn't speak in or narrate any of them. He is known by a trademark green sweatshirt, which he wears on television and in public appearances.
