Experience the ways sound and space interact in the Gardner’s first exhibition of sound art. Listen Hear: The Art of Sound features installations throughout the Museum and beyond its walls, inspiring new ways to experience the galleries and making sonic connections to the surrounding neighborhood.

Listen Hear presents ten works by emerging and established artists who approach sound from very different angles. Take a “sound walk” created for the Back Bay Fens, or visit an installation in the Ruggles MBTA station that links the Northeastern University community campus and Haley House Bakery Café in Roxbury. Participate in Sound Lab, a community-inspired collaborative and interactive sound work in Calderwood Hall, during the first week of the exhibition. Encounter site-specific pieces in both the historic and new buildings that respond to their surroundings in surprising and evocative ways.
Each space — historic and contemporary, inside and outside — offers a new sound experience. Together, these works ask us to consider how sound pieces teach us to listen differently, to pay attention to the role of sound in our daily lives, and to understand why so many contemporary artists are drawn to this ephemeral art form.
The Goethe-Institut contribution is Harmonic Conduit by O+A (Bruce Odland & Sam Auinger) which will sonically link two communities, Northeastern University and Roxbury, with a new sound installation in Boston’s Ruggles Station.

The exhibition also is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which receives funding from the State of Massachusetts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as by the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, administrated by the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture.
