Each year the German Translation Fund organizes several workshops around the world focused on translating from German into one particular language and vice versa. This year for the first time, one of these ViceVersa week-long workshops is taking place in the United States with five German to English translators and five English to German translators, led by
Shelley Frisch and
Karen Nölle. In conjunction with this workshop, Frisch and Nölle will host a panel on current directions in literary translation, and workshop participants will present from new translations in progress. The evening will provide a window into what it means to spend most-- or all-- of one's waking hours contemplating texts in one language and recreating them in new linguistic garb.
During this evening celebrating translation, the winner of the 2017 Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize will be announced.
Shelley Frisch has translated numerous books from the German, including biographies of Nietzsche, Einstein, and Leonardo da Vinci. Her translation of Karin Wieland’s
Dietrich & Riefenstahl was a finalist for the NBCC awards, and her translation of Reiner Stach’s 3-volume Kafka biography has been awarded Modern Language Association and Helen and Kurt Wolff translation prizes. She lives in Princeton, NJ.
Karen Nölle has been translating from English to German for 30 years, focussing mainly on women writers. Among the authors she has translated are Annie Dillard, Janet Frame, Doris Lessing, Alice Munro and Eudora Welty. She also works as a freelance editor and writes travel guides and travel books. Since 2010 she has been responsible for the program of the small women’s press edition fünf.
This event takes place on the occasion of a workshop held at Omi Writers Center at Ledig House, sponsored by the German Translation Fund, Robert Bosch Foundation, and Pro Helvetia.
