In Vietnam, New Music has gained considerable importance in the cultural. Vietnamese composers and musicians perform new music for national and international audiences. Their musical spectrum is wide-ranging from the European music of the 20th century as a reference for the art of composing, to a multi-faceted Vietnamese music history that inspires and challenges them. From this cornucopia draws the new generation of composers like Kim Ngoc, Vu Nhat Tan, Luong Hue Trinh and others more. They address the demands of what is called New Music. They pick up on the themes and melodies which have been carried on through generations and which they bring thematically and musically into today's.
Acknowledging this musical wealth and the variety of musical paths, the Goethe-Institut promotes concerts that break new ground in terms of sound aesthetics. We also look at the beginnings of New Music in Europe, and we promote innovation in Vietnam.
Our series on New Music sets off with a performance of Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schönberg, one of the musical pioneers who created the transition from classical music (since J.S. Bach to R. Wagner). Schoenberg and his contemporaries shaped the notions of what we understand today as New Music, namely a wealth of different streams of composed music.
Our New Music program includes performances that broaden the artistic message in terms of sound, melody, rhythm, shape and the use of media. New music is searching for new sounds, new forms or novel combinations of old styles, it continues existing traditions or deliberately breaks with them.
