Manzi Art Space and Goethe-Institut are pleased to present ‘Land of Leisure’ – a solo exhibition by Le Phi Long, one of the most promising visual artists of Vietnam. ‘Land of Leisure’ is part of Le Phi Long's research project on Indochina in late 19th and early 20th century.

The exhibition features a site-specific installation and a series of paintings created from old archival photos and drawings of wildlife hunting activities in Da Lat during the colonial period. Hunting illustrates the exercising power in Longs works. Long tries to stimulate a critical reflection of the power structures in Indochina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and at the same time he wants to draw attention to the ongoing postcolonial structures in our society today.

The multimedia installation ‘DALAT’ (Dat Aliis Laetitiam Aliis Temperiem) plays with the sensual perception of the viewers. Through the dawning light, the projection with pine branches swinging in the wind and the sounds of hoof beats in the background, the borders between place and time vanish. Viewers are transported back to Indochina during the early 20th Century, when the European ideology made its way to a new land in the South East.

Hunting as a metaphor for politics

Longs visual language is metaphorically loaded and plays with the critical aspect of the aestheticisation of violence – in his series ‘Hunting as a metaphor for politics’ Long directly takes reference to imperialistic drawings and stages hunting scenes as well as dead animal bodies or skeletons by using a golden colour. At the same time the artist comments his own work through such highlights. Longs work stimulates a dialog, which invites the viewer to discuss and take position in this postcolonial discussion.
