The Basic Law is an admirable constitutional institution. This year, the Basic Law will be 70 years old. In Germany, it is the basis for the unique development and success story of modern Germany. Internationally, the Basic Law is recognized as a reference model for the rule of law. At the center of constitutional reality is the human dignity of the individual.

The Basic Law is at the same time a flexible and stable set of rules that is firm and open enough to facilitate and balance social conflicts. It guarantees social balance, is the basis for a reliable rule of law, and sets the framework for freedom of expression and much more.

The Basic Law defines institutions. This is the basis for the division of powers, the division between the legislative, executive and legal systems themselves. The Basic Law establishes the party system and the conditions for constitutional amendments. The constitutional reality of the last 70 years, the existence of challenges of different kinds and the experience provide a reliable foundation and a clear orientation for the future.
