Goethe-Institut Hanoi

An Italian family that emigrates to the Ruhr region must find their way in their new home

After his films were broadcast two years ago as part of the German Film Week, Fatih Akin’s work appears a second time on the screen of the Goethe Institute Hanoi. This time as part of the culinary cinema of Wanderlust Küche.

The title says it all: In November, as part of the Wanderlust Küche project, the Goethe-Institute Hanoi will be screening two films, which all treat the subjects of cooking and eating. The film screenings are regarded as a pre-event of the Wanderlust Küche and quicken the appetite for The Blue Hour – a gourmet event. The prelude is the German comedy Solino by Fatih Akin.

How did the pizza actually get to the Ruhr area? A gastronomic family from the southern Italian town of Solino, decides to move to Duisburg to start a new life. With the opening of the first pizzeria in the Ruhr area, the Amatos are introducing the famous dish in Germany. While their business quickly succeeds, the family breaks up in the unexpected circumstances of German daily life. Future dreams, relationship crises and fateful events jeopardize the family’s happiness. In the end, the life of the Amatos takes an unexpected turn.

The film takes place in the year 1964, at the time of the German economic miracle. The news also reached other countries after a short time. Especially in Italy, Germany quickly became known as "the Promised Land". Thereupon, many Italian families moved to Germany to find a job. The majority of these families opened their own restaurants, paving the way for the arrival of Italian cuisine in German food culture.

Through its historical background of migration, the film is more relevant than ever and emphasizes the power of food culture as a platform for intercultural dialogue. As a preparation for the project of the Wanderlust Küche, we invite all culinary fans to join the film screening on 22th November 2018, at 07:00 pm, in the hall of the Goethe Institut Hanoi, and thus to the culinary attunement for the blue hour.
