“Vietnam Truc Chi Art“ and the artist Phan Hải Bằng present artworks made of bamboo paper – the rediscovery of the traditional handcraft extends in the context of Contemporary Art.

"You cannot step twice into the same stream" is a saying according to Heraclitus. The flow of life is constantly in flux – as is the evolution of Vietnamese bamboo, which grows mostly on the banks of rivers. The production of paper made from bamboo has a long tradition in some Asian countries, but the process is usually completed with the moulding of the paper. But this is just the beginning for Truc Chi - a new form of art: the artists of the group interact with the wet structure of the paper in the frame and use water pressure and other techniques to change the surface. In this way, unique images are created, which some artists further process through brush or collage techniques. Paper was previously only considered as a raw material for the creation of art; TRUC CHI, however, shows that papermaking can be regarded as a form of art in itself.

The person behind the new discovery of bamboo paper for Contemporary Art is the artist Phan Hải Bằng, who developed new techniques for the treatment of the material. In 2012 Phan Hải Bằng together with students of the Hue College of Arts formed the association Viet Nam Truc Chi Art ("Nghệ Thuật Trúc Chỉ Việt Nam").

The exhibition "Truc Chi - Listen To The River" presents bamboo paper artworks for the first time in the Goethe-Institut Hanoi. Following the exhibition in Hanoi, the works will be displayed in the Museum of Royal Antiquities in Hue.

Phan Hải Bằng studied Graphic Arts in Hue and at the Hanoi University of Industrial Art. He completed his master's degree in Fine Arts at Maha Sarakham, Thailand. Since 1996 he works as a lecturer at the Hue College of Arts. His works were presented in numerous group and solo exhibitions. TRUC CHI is his latest project, which he already exhibited in 2015 in the RedDoor in Ho-Chi-Minh-City.
