Young filmmakers from Doclab will present their new projects and as a special Highlight a German curator from Hamburg will show her Short-Film-program. With it: a Workshop and a Southeast Asian cinema symposium.

For the fifth year, Hanoi DocLab and Goethe-Institut Hanoi are proud to present the current edition of DocFest – Vietnam’s only annual festival dedicated to independent creative documentaries, experimental and hybrid films.

Hanoi DocFest wants to bring to the audience the films of the independent cinema from all over the world and so the festival will showcase new documentary and experimental productions coming mostly from Vietnam, but also Southeast Asia and Europe. A special Highlight will be the presentation of a Short-Film-Program from the German curator Birgit Glombitza from Hamburg. She herself will be at the Festival and talk about the contemporary aesthetics and current trends of short films.

At DocFest 2017, you will discover productions that cover a broad ranges of social themes as well as personal stories through a series of films from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Germany and will also have a chance to meet and talk with the filmmakers.

This year's program also expands to include a new field recording workshop with Ernst Karel, a sound engineering specialist from Harvard University`s Sensory Ethnography Lab. Also a 2-day symposium on "Space, Time & the Visceral in Southeast Asian Cinema" is planned, dedicated to cinema of the region.

A long weekend of film screenings, discussions and dialogue exchange offers many opportunities to engage with contemporary Vietnamese cinema.
