Film screenings about the image of the woman in the context of the Kieu-program

In the context of the project THE GIRL KIEU the Goethe institute in concerned about the current image of women in society and the arts. Accompanying this project the institute is showing two German films.

Effi Briest by Rainer Fassbinder is an artistic film and a classic about the wedding of German film. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Theodor Fontane from the year 1894. A young women gets married off to an older man, breaks with norms and rules of her time and finally breaks down thereon.

The touching and impressive life journey of Effi Briest hasn’t lost its validity or relevance. The main character Effi seems to be torn between the drive to life a self-determinated life and the acceptance of the given circumstances. Parallels to the Vietnamese epic TRUYEN KIEU can be found. The question concerning the positon of the woman in the context of social expectations and constrains is a topic of the Vietnamese-German communication.
