The Goethe-Institut e.V. is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. We promote the knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. We convey a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about cultural, social and political life in our nation.

The Goethe-Institut South Africa is looking to employ a dedicated employee as driver and assistant caretaker as of 01.11.2019 or later. This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week (Monday to Thursday from 08:30 - 18:00 and Friday from 08:30 – 14:30). It is a local office whose remuneration is based on the remuneration scheme for local employees of the Goethe-Institut South Africa.  

Scope of Work as Driver (main responsibility) will include, but is not limited to

  • Driving the company car according to the requirements of the Goethe-Institut
  • Providing safe, and punctual service at all times
  • Ensuring the vehicle log books are accurate, completed and kept up to date
  • Running errands for the Institute
  • Deliveries and collections
  • Collecting and transporting guests and staff to and from their various destinations in a safe manner, including on weekends and after hours
  • Ensuring at all times that traffic regulations are obeyed and that any problems with the company vehicles are reported immediately
  • Maintaining, cleaning and washing the motor vehicle of the Goethe-Institut by one’s own hand
  • Ensuring vehicle has enough fuel at all times, license disk is always up to date and car is sent for regular checks
  • Performing other duties as directed
  • Scope of Work as Assistant Caretaker & Technician (support when required)
  • Maintenance of premises, classrooms and parking areas
  • Cleaning of the Atrium and waste disposal
  • Monitoring the work of external handymen
  • Preparing rooms before exam days
  • Technical support on exam days
  • Lock-up service
  • Supporting the organisation, preparation and coordination of events at the institute
  • Helping with general duties in the house as directed


  • Valid Code 8 driver’s license and minimum four years experience as Code 8 driver
  • Very good English language skills
  • Reliable, honest and punctual
  • Respectful behaviour, well-spoken and well presented
  • Confident and able to deal with guests, clients, suppliers, colleagues and others
  • Strong ability to work unsupervised, promptly and always professionally
  • Following procedures outlined by superiors and clients (e.g. collection of deliveries)
  • Knowledge of various routes in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria
  • Initiative within the framework of responsibilities and skills
  • Team and communication skills
  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Clear criminal record and clear accident record
  • Contactable references
  • Must be computer literate
  • PDP advantageous
  • German advantageous
  • South African work permit
