You are invited to the South African launch of Water Birds on the Lakeshore: An Anthology of African Young-Adult Fiction. This exciting publication is the outcome of the first iteration of the Afro Young Adult project, which aims to support the production and dissemination of literature by African authors for young-adult readers. The anthology, which was curated by Zukiswa Wanner, and published simultaneously in English, French and Swahili translations, was launched in October 2018 at the Ake Book Festival in Lagos, and is currently being distributed in countries across the continent.

Water Birds on the Lakeshore features 17 stories that were selected from 435 submissions from 28 African countries. The original stories were written in English, French or Swahili, and the selected stories were then translated into the other 2 languages the anthology was published in.

The Johannesburg launch will take place at the Goethe-Institut South Africa in Johannesburg on 27 February 2020. First we will start with an introduction on the courses, exams and programmes offered at the Goethe-Institut. There you stand a chance to receive one of our giveaways. Thereafter Afro Young Adults curator and acclaimed author Zukiswa Wanner will be present at the launch together with Precious Kemigisha, author of the title story Water Birds on the Lakeshore. Kemigisha will read her story, after which there will be a chance for the audience to engage in conversation with the authors, including Shamin Chibba author of The Year of Failure, also featured in the anthology. There will also be an opportunity to experience our Library-Gamebox-Hub space by joining in on various board games, digital games, indigenous games and a Rally.

The anthology will be on sale on 27 & 28 February at the Goethe-Institut.
