Arts Education Development Programme
Artucation

An interdisciplinary arts education programme brings high school learners from Johannesburg’s inner city into curated spaces, where they initiate dialogues commenting on their social, political and personal environment.

The Artucation Programme is an interdisciplinary arts education programme by Keep the Dream Arts in Partnership with the Goethe-Institut. Its main objective is to offer arts education to schools that do not have the access or resources to do so. The programme is currently offered to grade 9 -10 learners from high schools located in Johannesburg’s inner city but aims to extend to schools in every province, ultimately impacting more facilitators, learners and schools.

Taking place weekly, Artucation incorporates film, applied drama, community music and visual arts. Learners visit exhibitions and curated spaces as a starting point to initiate dialogues which comment on learners’ social, political and personal environment. The aim is to create a space where they talk about the art that they see and begin unpack and translate themes in their own interpretation. These discussions continue beyond the gallery or curated space into the classroom.
