Die Onthulling was a Dance theatre collaboration between Theatre in the Backyard and the Garage Dance Ensemble in O’kiep, Northern Cape.

Mhlanguli George, the founder of the Theatre in the Backyard project, collaborated with the Garage Dance Ensemble in the Namaqualand town of O’kiep to create a site-specific narrative dance work that was presented in the backyard of Garage Dance Ensemble founders Alfred Hinkel and John Linden. Die Onthulling (Afrikaans for the unveiling), tells a story of family, love, betrayal, revenge and guilt. The work was devised by Mhlanguli George and 5 young dancers from the Garage Dance Ensemble, directed by Mhlanguli George and choreographed by Dustin Jannetjies under the mentorship of Alfred Hinkel and John Linden.

Cape Town-based dance photographer Ruth Smith was invited to document the performance, and mentored two photographers from O’kiep, who also contributed to the documentation of the performance. The work, which was performed three times over Easter Weekend, was seen by residents of O’kiep and surrounding areas, who form the core public for the Garage Dance Ensemble’s work.
