In the early 1990s, when the end of Apartheid was in sight, but there was still a cultural boycott against South Africa, the Goethe-Institut Harare occasionally established contact with South African's cultural sector and German teacher's associations. In 1995 the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg was esablished, at first within the German faculty of the Wits University and then in rented offices in Rosebank. In the year 2000 we moved to an estate owned by the German state. The walls surrounding this property were torn down in 2009.

After many exciting projects and building a lot of ties with our local partners, we are celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2020!

Hüseyin Yilmaz came to Germany from Turkey in 1964, and later brought his wife and children. With warmth and a sense of humour, his granddaughter recounts their family history – whilst the clan is “back home” on holiday. Where their real home is, is a question they are all confronted with.
