Exhibition opening: Thursday 16 March 2017, 17H00
Asmara, capital of Eritrea, is the only bigger city in the world which combines most varying movements of the architectural modernity in an ensemble. Most buildings are built in the architectural language of Architettura Razionale, the Italian modernity of the 20th and 30th, but also Art Deco, Novecento, Futurism, Neoclassicism, Neo-baroque, Monumentalism and buildings relating to Eritrean methods of construction, described as Syncretism. The fascination emanating from Asmara’s vanguard architecture stands in stark contrast to the city’s history: colonialism, fascism, and apartheid.
Eritrea has applied to have Asmara on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Goal of the exhibition is to support this application. Visitors of the exhibition may sign an appeal that Asmara’s architecture becomes a UNESCO World Heritage. The List of signers will be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee before it takes its decision on the application.
Exhibition open Monday - Friday 10H00 – 17H00 (by prior arrangement until 19H00, phone +27 021 4617420)
