“It’s not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences” – Audre Lorde

Nothing Makes Sense is an interrogation of violence with a specific focus on the violence that emerges because of our continued human obsession with systems of classification based on sex, race, gender, sexuality, class, culture and physical ability. The work is an investigation of the full spectrum of violence that we are all subjected to as a result of these systems, from full blown physical acts of racist, sexist, homophobic or classist violence to much subtler forms of violence that restrict, restrain, moderate or mould our behaviour.

Nothing Makes Sense hopes to disrupt common perceptions of the black male experience as a means to begin to reveal the violence implicit in systems that label, classify, divide and control.  It will seek to do so through a deconstruction of the black, male performing body which will be the spring-board for shattering the stereotypes and binaries in contemporary society. At the same time it will disrupt and question the stereotype of the normative ‘performing body’. The work is a searing declaration of the right to live, to be seen as a human being, regardless of your race, disability, gender, culture, class or anything else.

Unmute Dance Company and Artscape Theatre Centre will be sending out invitation from the 28th of October to partners and stakeholders.
