In 2019, the Goethe-Institut continues its years-long partnership with the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival with a new edition of the Young Composers project, where young composers are invited to compose new works responding to the theme of the Mozart Festival for that year, and collaborate with an artist from another discipline to present new performances.

Young composers Conrad Asman, Jesse Dreyer and Kayode Ibiayo will perform three brand new works exploring the theme of Ein Musikalischer Spass (A Musical Joke), the theme for this year’s festival, at JIMF 2019. This project has been facilitated by Festival Composer-in-Residence Hans Roosenschoon. Physical Theatre specialist Craig Morris has collaborated with each composer to create a physical performance that will be presented with the compositions. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion led by Hans Roosenschoon, including the composers and performers, about the creative process. The performance of the three new works has been produced by the Apollo Music Trust, in partnership with the Goethe-Institut. Performances will be presented at the Goethe-Institut at 3pm. Entrance is free.
