The Reading Room began with a space being created to house ten portraits from Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi’s Heroes series and a variety of books and publications loosely related to the question or proposition of, “what is a hero?” The collectives Alphabet Zoo and Danger Gevaar Ingozi have been present throughout much of the exchange, and over the course of several months, there have been different kinds of responses to this proposition and to the Reading Room itself by artists and writers.

Alphabet Zoo and Danger Gevaar Ingozi’s most recent engagement – a wheat paste installation and the addition of screen printed works, engages another set of questions and stand as the penultimate episode of the Reading Room. As a final gesture Lavendhri Arumugam and Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi will re-engage the space to look at the Reading Room as an organism, studying what happened, and to create something that not only speaks back to itself, but opens new questions. They aim to start a new conversation that signals the transformation of the Reading Room into something else, somewhere else.

The opening of this final installations is also the closing event of The Reading Room.
