Disinformation And Elections

Disinformation, misinformation and ‘fake news’ during election periods is a scourge that has affected the fairness and credibility in a number of countries around the world. With South Africa’s elections coming up in less than two weeks, what role has disinformation, particularly on social media platforms, played?  Join us for a panel discussion to hear about some of the online narratives that the Independent Electoral Commission has encountered, why combating disinformation matters and what we can learn from other countries in tackling these issues.

The discussion will be facilitated by Chriselda Lewis (Anchor of Unfiltered and SABC Prime Time Evening News). Speakers are Dr. Martin Schäfer (German Ambassador to SA, Lesotho & eSwatini), Commisioner Janet Love (IEC Vice president), Ranjeni Munusamy (Associate Editor at Tiso Blackstar Group) and Angela Quintal (representing the Commiteefor the protection of journalists).

The event is a cooperation of the Goethe-Institut, Media Monitoring Africa and the German Embassy Pretoria.
