While most of the start-ups at the Hub@Goethe have a more creative focus, we also welcome social entrepreneurs into our programme. This is how Maggie Mthombeni and Amy Tekié became part of the Hub with their project “Izwi Domestic Workers Alliance”, and we are very excited to have an Imagination Night dedicated to discussing rights and agency of domestic workers in South Africa.
Izwi Domestic Workers Alliance is about possibility, of one million energetic and powerful women. It is about rights, of some of South Africa’s most vulnerable workers. And it is about creative empowerment, using technology, markets, and the collaborative economy to bridge the economic divide.
Domestic work has deep and troubled roots, but it remains a critical means of livelihood for so many breadwinners. Shifting the nature of this industry from informal, paid servanthood to professional dignified work is a complex but entirely achievable aim.
For the past year, Izwi has been negotiating labour conflicts on behalf of domestic workers. We are now building on digital platforms, media possibilities and the increasing responsibility of thousands of South African employers, which has paved the way for our upcoming launch of our employer outreach campaign.
Come take part in imagining new ways of seeing and supporting the women who are supporting us.
