On the occasion of a visit to Johannesburg by author and scriptwriter Torsten Schulz, the Goethe-Institut is honoured to present a screening of the film Boxhagener Platz. Directed by Matti Geschonneck, the film is set in 1968. While revolution is stirring in much of the world, things are the same as they always are in Boxhagener Platz, a neighborhood in East Berlin. The film tells the story of teenager Holger and his family, including his grandmother Otti, her ailing husband Rudi and Otti’s suitors - a fish salesman who is said to have a notorious past and a spry but aging philosopher. Then the fish salesman dies under suspicious circumstances. The police have their work cut out for them.

After the screening, there will be a discussion with Torsten Schulz, author of the novel upon which the film was based, as well as the script of the film itself.

Important notice: Due to difficulties with obtaining a screening edition of the film Boxhagener Platz with English subtitles, the film will unfortunately be screened without English subtitles. An introduction to the film, as well as the discussion afterwards, will however be in English.
