Our future is increasingly digital. Around the world, we are witnessing the rise of Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, Google and others, providing a new place offering audio visual content. What are the implications for our existing broadcast media? What does it mean for local content? How should media, policy makers and new players respond? Join us together with the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg and Media Monitoring Africa at a debate with broadcasting executives and sector experts from South Africa and Germany!

Madoda Mxakwe
Chief Executive Officer, SABC

Mr. Madoda Mxakwe is the Group Chief Executive Officer of the SABC. He held several executive positions in business, communications and public affairs before taking up his role at South Africa’s public broadcaster. He holds an M.A. (Global Political Economy) from Sussex University in the UK, as well as certificates from London Business School and the Gordon Institute of Business School (GIBS). Mr Mxakwe worked for Nestle serving in different senior capacities, the last one being the country head responsible for Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho.

 
Calvo Mawela
Chief Executive Officer, MultiChoice Group

Calvo Mawela joined MultiChoice in 2011, having been with the Group since 2006. His first role in MultiChoice was as an executive in the Chairman’s office and in 2013 as Head of Stakeholder and Regulatory Affairs. He has a strong background in the broadcasting industry, having started his career at Sentech as an Engineer, his transition into regulatory began when he joined ICASA as Broadcasting Spectrum Manager. Calvo holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu Natal, as well as diploma from Wits Business School and King’s College (UK, London). He has served on a number of Ministerial Advisory Task Teams, including the Digital Migration Working Group, Digital Dzonga and the ICT Policy Review Panel.

 
Alexander Pfeiffer
Managing Editor at German public broadcaster ZDF

Alexander Pfeiffer is the managing editor of the ZDF‘s department Neue Medien, the digital media division of the German public broadcaster. In this position, he is responsible for the central planning and development processes of the ZDFmediathek and he contributes to the strategic development of its on-demand offers. In his previous positions, he was responsible for the development of FUNK – a youth-oriented platform of German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF. Mr Pfeiffer holds a Master of Science from FOM University for Economy and Management in Cologne.

 
Mapi Mhlangu
Former eNCA Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief

Mapi Mhlangu is the founder and managing director of MInsight Content Creation, a content consultancy firm that works with newsrooms across the continent. Ms. Mhlangu is the former eNCA managing director and editor-in-chief. She is a frequent speaker at international conferences and panels. Mapi Mhlangu recently completed an MBA dissertation focusing on top five private legacy news media groups on the continent. She is currently working with United for News to develop a comprehensive index of reputable online informational media in South Africa.

 
Nzinga Qunta (Facilitator)
News Anchor, SABC

Nzinga Qunta is a news anchor with experience in radio and television, currently anchoring SABC 3 and DSTV 404’s 1pm business news. She has worked as prime time television news anchor interviewing a range of people from government and business. Nzinga covered national elections in 2014 facilitating debates and discussions with political parties across the spectrum every evening for 3 months, was part of the Nelson Mandela funeral coverage as well as Oscar Pistorius trial. She was also radio news anchor on PowerFM in 2015.
