Every year, selections of the very best new short films shown at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen are screened at cinemas across the world. These programmes, entitled “Oberhausen on tour”, have for the last years been screened in Johannesburg by the Goethe-Institut, in partnership with the Bioscope. In 2019, two programmes of the best of the best of the 2018 Oberhausen festival will be showcased at the Bioscope.
Established in 1954, and presented annually in the industrial German city of Oberhausen, the Kurzfilmtage, as it is known in German, is one of the major international platforms for cutting edge short films. Over the decades, the festival has served as a launch pad for many illustrious careers. Filmmakers who showed early works in Oberhausen include Miloš Forman, Werner Herzog, Roman Polanski, Christoph Schlingensief and Martin Scorsese. Asked about Oberhausen, Wim Wenders once said in an interview: “I smoked my first cigarette here. For years, I saw every single film at the Westdeutsche Kurzfilmtage, looking forward to those days in Oberhausen every year. These events were important for me, for my decision to become a filmmaker.”
