Gerd Wiesler is a loyal officer of the East German secret police nick-named the Stasi. 
As the allegiance of the famous playwright Georg Dreyman is in question, Gerd is ordered to bug Dreyman's apartment and spy on him. He becomes a witness to Dreyman's relationship with actress Christa-Maria Sieland and slowly becomes sympathetic to the couple.
Simultaneously, doubts over the legitimacy of Gerd's orders develope and slowly an urge to not just observe, but to intervene grows in him...

The Lives of Others found great critical acclaim and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2006.
