THE HANDS THAT FEED YOU is an exhibition presented by the thirdspace collective which is made up of cultural practitioners Russel Hlongwane and Joao Roxo, in which the duo maps systemic activities of economic, political, social and psychological dependency.
Through the dialogue that visual communication establishes with this dependency system, the installation proposes a passive form of protest through creativity, reclaiming the value of the craftsman’s hand as a vehicle for liberation, calling to the fact that your own hands are the real hands that feed you: self-sufficiency prevailing over dependency. We look at “informality” on its own standard and use it to demonstrate how alternative or thirdspace are created, bringing into the conversation various communities of practice operating at the margins of globalised systems through established networks that escape the formal prescribed structure of labour systems and exist in a value chain that is somewhat self-directed.
