Water Birds on the Lakeshore features 17 stories that were selected from 435 submissions from 28 African countries. The original stories were written in English, French or Swahili, and the selected stories were then translated into the other 2 languages the anthology was published in.
Water Birds on the Lakeshore: An Anthology of African Young-Adult Fiction is the outcome of the first iteration of the Afro Young Adult project, which aims to support the production and dissemination of literature by African authors for young-adult readers. The anthology, which was curated by Zukiswa Wanner, and published simultaneously in English, French and Swahili translations, was launched in October 2019 at the Ake Book Festival in Lagos, and is currently being distributed in countries across the continent.
The panel will consist of authors Fatma Shafii (The Journey), Howard Meh-Buh Maximus (Oubliette) and Yamikani Mlangiza (Forever Hers) and it will be moderated by Zukiswa Wanner, the editor of Water Birds on the Lakeshore: An Athology of African Young Adult Fiction.
The event will be live-streamed on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/goethe.joburg
