12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

In this panel discussion we look to explore the different ways in which cultural heritage
education can be reimagined and transformed to be more attractive and exciting for younger audiences. This panel looks at key insights and challenges from those working at the forefront of the space.

Host: Lebohang Masango,
Panelist: Stefanie Kastner, Goethe Institute
Panelist: Blessing Mawire, National Library
Panelist: Julia Norrish, Book Dash

During our initial investigation to understand GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) challenges following the outbreak of Covid-19, the HSRC et al highlighted that they are looking for new and exciting ways to make learning about cultural heritage more exciting for younger audiences particularly with history becoming a compulsory subject in South African schools from 2023. This was a major motivation for the inclusion of edutainment as a problem track in the Hack Ur Culture hackathon.

Our goal for this panel discussion is to explore new ways in which cultural heritage education can take the next step in regards to accessibility and inclusivity through digital channels.

Please see the following content references where cultural heritage knowledge is being shared in new and exciting ways:

  • History Education - Avi and Khumbi in Africa

Could institutions like the National Library, the HSRC and other archives be interested in using processes similar to Book Dash and the Goethe game jam to develop new interactive content formats to achieve their objectives of cultural heritage preservation and education?

The event will be live-streamed on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/goethe.joburg
