Family Matters South Africa

On Saturday 2 October, join us at LAPA, the new project space of the Goethe-Institut at Breezeblock in Brixton for a screening of 3 films created by Zara Julius. She was commisioned by the Goethe-Institut to tell the stories of 4 South African families as part of the Family Matters project. The screenings start at 6pm and will be followed by a discussion with Zara Julius and Mazwi Madlala. To RSVP, send an email to Francois.Venter@goethe.de.

In 2020, the Goethe-Institut in SSA commissioned filmmakers in 5 countries in the region to create short films about selected families in their countries. These films were put together in the form of a regional project entitled "Family Matters", and made available to the public in the form of an online exhibition. The exhibition can be viewed on our website.

Artist Zara Julius was commissioned by the Goethe-Institut in 2020 and 2021 to produce 3 films dealing with the histories of 4 South African families. Two of the films are part of the Family Matters internet-based exhibition which can be viewed on the website of the Goethe-Institut South Africa, and the third work, entitled “Canelands” was shown as part of the Weimar Symposium programme in 2021.

In order to show the 3 works in the best possible conditions to an invited audience in Johannesburg, the 3 films will be shown at Lapa, the project space of the cultural programmes department of the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Zara Julius and Mazwi Madlala, moderated by Thuli Gamedze.
