On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Goethe-Institut and GIZ have been collaborating to support the cultural and creative industries (CCI) in South Africa and a number of other countries in Africa and the Middle East through various projects since 2018. In South Africa, both GIZ and Goethe-Institut focus their support, particularly on the Animation/New Media and Fashion sectors.

The Cav‘ Platform, a project of the Goethe-Institut, together with Animation South Africa (ASA) have developed a series of Dialogue Forums that focus on topics relevant to the animation industry. These will be held at various South African festivals with an interest in animation and take place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

The first Dialogue Forum takes place in Johannesburg on 29 April 2022, at a hybrid event at the Radisson Red in Rosebank and kicks off the series with a focus on incubators as a model for transformation. Titled ‘Innovating in the incubator space through hybrid models’, this dialogue considers the current ASA incubator ‘Road to Commercialisation - Broadcast Readiness Incubator’, headed up by ASA’s Isabelle Rorke.

This dialogue will explore how the ASA incubator has impacted the candidates and how this model can be expanded for greater transformation through entrepreneurial and general skills development for sustainable job creation. The event will also be live-streamed through the Animation SA and Cav’ Platform Facebook groups. Goethe-Institut and Animation SA have been collaborating over the past 3 years on the Cav‘ Platform, particularly focusing on the transformation of the South African animation industry.

“This partnership is one the ways that Cav’ Platform is contributing to conversations we hope will yield better income prospects for those involved in the animation industry,” said Goethe-Institut project manager Bandile Gumbi.

GIZ is providing support to Animation SA to strengthen their internal capacity as an industry association, further develop services to members and broaden Animation SA’s role and capacity for advocacy and lobbying work on behalf of the industry.

The second Dialogue Forum is set to take place during the Durban Film Mart in July and the final Dialogue Forum will take place at the Cape Town International Animation Festival in August.

All three Dialogue Forums form part of the greater conversation ASA continues to have within the animation and gaming industry, seeking greater transformation and more opportunities for South African animation and gaming professionals on home soil.

About the project “Cultural and Creative Industries” (CCI)

The project “Cultural and Creative Industries” is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut. It improves employment and income opportunities for creative professionals in six partner countries; Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa and operates mainly in the music, fashion, design and animation sectors. In addition to promoting the development of entrepreneurial, digital, creative and technical skills through training programmes, the project aims to strengthen the framework conditions and the ecosystem of the cultural and creative industries. As a federally owned enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.
