Commemoration of the 1938 November Pogrom presented by the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, the Goethe-Institut and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung.
On the night of 9 November 1938, German government led anti-Jewish violence erupted throughout Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland. This wave of government-supported violence against Jewish people, property and places of worship marks the beginning of the Holocaust.
The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, the Goethe-Institut and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung will commemorate the November Pogrom on 9 November at the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg.
The keynote address will be by renowned historian Professor Christopher Browning.
PROGRAM
Christopher Browning
Christopher R. Browning was the Frank Porter Graham Professor of History at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill until his retirement in May 2014. He has served as an expert witness in “war crimes” and “Holocaust denial” trials in Australia, Canada, and Great Britain. In 2000, he was an expert witness in the David Irving’s libel suit against Deborah Lipstadt in London.
He is a three-time recipient of the Jewish National Book Award—Holocaust Category, for Ordinary Men, The Origins of the Final Solution, and Remembering Survival.
Deborah Lipstadt
Ambassador Deborah E. Lipstadt is the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. As Special Envoy, she leads efforts to advance U.S. foreign policy to counter antisemitism throughout the world. Special Envoy Lipstadt has a storied career as a historian, academic, and author. She received the National Jewish Book Award three times, most recently in 2019 for Antisemitism: Here and Now.
Special Envoy Lipstadt is probably best known for having been sued for libel by David Irving, one of the world’s leading Holocaust deniers. The case, which lasted for six years and was heard in court in a twelve-week trial, resulted in Irving being declared by the court to be “a right-wing polemicist,” who engages in antisemitism, racism, and misogyny. That trial was depicted in the 2016 film Denial, which was based on her book History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier.
Tali Nates
Tali Nates is the founder and director of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre and Chair of the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation. She was the recipient of many awards including the Czech Gratias Agit Award (2020), the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Award (2021) and the Goethe Medal (2022). Born to a family of Holocaust survivors, her father and uncle were saved by Oskar Schindler.

They’ve introduced new music and new arrangements to old favourites. They are directed by Jessica Sherman who composes new music and arranges the rest. She has sung in shul choirs since she was 7 years old. Jessica plays guitar and sings alto. She is joined by soprano Leigh Nudelman Sussman, known for her performances of Yiddish songs, Dillon Davies (who is unable to be here today) on guitar and Keith Witelson on percussion.
