Index of Edges is an exhibition that draws on the vast global worlds of encounter along east African coastal cities to draw into visibility deep historical knowledge of living with and along seas.

An index is not a map - rather than delineating boundaries it gathers people, repositions histories and draws out significance. Sites and stories of deep and near futures are drawn into adjacency from Cape Town to Port Said. Index of Edges consists of Watery Archives through film and drawing, exhibited at the Biennale Architettura 2023 in Venice, Italy, and Watery Stories, exhibited in Venice and online at Indexofedges.net.

Watery Stories is an anthology of 8-parts, which gathers researchers, writers, and practitioners who share knowledge and narrations of what it means to live alongside coastal edges. The stories and readings shared speak to embodied and leaky archives which weave through narrative and infrastructure, text and word. They weave an oral map of coastal conditions from Cape Town to Port Said, which speak of a myriad of watery bodies and beings.

Here, architecture is understood as a set of world-making practices. These audio excerpts speak to material, tangible, and tactile ways of residing in salty atmospheres, the cool touch of morning mist or the impending danger of rocky shores and unpredictable waves; they share songs and sounds of building watery infrastructures; they share stories of sustenance and danger from fishing and diving in deep and shallow seas; they recall memories and histories passed down through families; and they recount untraceable tales shared about beings, and bodies of water.

Index of Edges is curated by Huda Tayob with Watery Stories from: Aaniyah Martin  with Joanne Peers, Traci Kwaai and Sarah Martin; Andariya.org (Nibras Abdel Basit and Hasan Kamil); Alia Mossallam with Mimi Al Ashry, Ibrahim al-Morsi and the Tanboura Band of Port Said; Andri Burnett; Asmaa Jama; Caroline Ngorobi with Suleiman Bakari, Omar Said and Omar Ali; Danielsun Okeyo; Dhaqan Collective; Dominique Somda; Halima Ali; Khadija Abdalla Bajaber; Kennedy Chikerema; Maria Gabriela Carrilho Aragão; Margarida Waco; Muhammad Taariq Husain Abdullatif; Nada Atieg; Nothando Nolwazi Lunga; Shiraz Bayjoo; Toni Giselle Stuart
