Short film screening on Masello Motana’s artist residency in Germany, discussion, DJ set by Flames Shilowa, performance of The Vocal Museum
Film Screening and live performance of Masello Motana's The Vocal Museum
Vocal historian and artist
Masello Motana is the founder of The Vocal Museum, a memoir performance that explores the South African songbook through a township narrative experience. She has been performing at
The Vocal Museum in South Africa in a variety of venues and has popped up in theatres in public spaces to present the show with a live band since 2014.
Motana will present
a short film that will have its premiere at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. The film, co-developed with the filmmakers Britta von der Behrens and Sebastian Eschenbach, documents her experiences and live performances during her
Artist Residency at the Wissenschaftsforum Cologne and Essen, Germany. During her research project
The Diasporic Experiment, she immersed herself in the (musical) memories and melodies of the Cologne/NRW based Afro-German communities. Together with German-based diasporic musicians and artists, these findings were condensed into collective sound spaces and performances.
The
short film will be followed by an artist talk between Masello Motana and the Curator and Art Historian Anna Brus (University of Cologne) on living sound archives and transnational memory scapes between South Africa and Germany.
Finally, Masello Motana will give a live performance of
The Vocal Museum.
