Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin

Berlin

Curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers with Grace Samboh, Gridthiya Gaweewong, June Yap

At the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin, the team explores the relationship between critical art forms like mainly performative arts, video art, installation and political protests and social developments in Southeast Asia and the former block states. Under discussion are gaze regimes and hegemonic narratives that have shaped social situations, the role of narratives behind imagined communities such as groups or nations, counter-narratives and counter-memories, and proposals for new narratives, communities and futures. One starting point will be Joseph Beuys’ expanded concept of art and the social sculpture and the works of Beuys at Hamburger Bahnhof. In addition, there are selected works and documents from the collections of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation from the age of imperialism to the present as well as loans from the cooperating museums in Chiang Mai, Jakarta and Singapore.

The exhibition is generously funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
