What happens when neither the teacher nor the students share a common language – and cultural differences shape the classroom experience?
In this presentation, an Iranian lecturer shares her experiences at Prince of Songkla University in Southern Thailand. Drawing on three semesters of teaching German as a Foreign Language to students of different majors and proficiency levels (A1–B1), she highlights the opportunities and challenges arising from linguistic barriers and cultural misunderstandings.
Topics include:
  • Strategies for turning obstacles into valuable learning resources
  • Methods for preventing and clarifying cultural misunderstandings
  • Practical approaches such as activating prior knowledge, using digital tools, and applying non-verbal communication
This presentation offers practice-oriented insights into how intercultural and communicative methods can make language teaching more effective – and how differences themselves can become meaningful learning opportunities.
