Description

East Berlin in the fall of 1989: Alex Kerner's mother is in a coma after a heart attack, so she doesn't know about the fall of the Berlin Wall. When she awakens in the summer of 1990, the doctor explains that any excitement could be fatal for the patient. So Alex and his friends decide to conceal the end of the SED state from her and fool the sick woman into believing that the GDR continues to exist. The illusion works for a long time until the truth can no longer be concealed.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, every trace of the former GDR was very thoroughly erased. The end came as a shock, all too quickly to be truly realized. The film addresses the end of the GDR in two ways: Behind the "big" story, the film tells the small story of Alex and his mother and their feelings. It is thus an impressive work on both a socio-historical and a human-emotional level.
