Paris – Ljubljana If we had the Freiraum – the time and the space – to do exactly what we want to do together, what would we do?

The Goethe-Institut Paris has invited three philosophers to discuss freedom, Europe and the city. In addition to the question of how to induce people to give more thought to the concept of freedom, the philosophers have come up with the utopian idea of a “quartier libre”, a “free neighbourhood”, whose residents have to answer a single question in a sort of experiment: What would we want to do together if we had unlimited space and economic freedom at our disposal?

Ljubljana–Paris
The Freiraum partners in Paris and Ljubljana have come up with a sequential format. In June, the Slovenian women's choir Kombinat went to Paris to sing international protest songs in various public places with a view to engaging passers-by in conversation. The questions they sought to address were: How can we coexist freely in Europe? How should we treat immigrants and refugees? What do we personally associate with the concepts of freedom and realms of freedom? Slovenian filmmaker Maja Ziberna captured on video the ideas that emerged during the performances and sidewalk conversations.
The next step is to process and elaborate on this material from Paris in a writing workshop in Ljubljana. The emphasis will be on writing as an act of free speech, enlisting the forces of knowledge and truth against manipulation and fake news. The project will conclude with a public reading.
