Genoa & Turin – Stockholm Empowering Youth

The questions asked in Genoa and Turin are all about young people in socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods, many of whom are from immigrant families. Together with the Youth Empowerment Partnership Programme (YEPP), these youths want to know from the Freiraum project quite concretely how they can overcome others’ preconceptions and their own economic discrimination in order to participate in cultural and social life.

Genoa/Turin-Stockholm
Genoa/Turin and Stockholm have identified a common core issue underlying their questions: discrimination. Their project partners, the Youth Empowerment Partnership Programme in Italy and the Mitt 127 initiative in a Stockholm suburb, are now working closely with young people to pinpoint the causes of discrimination. The partners have already exchanged several visits: Italian and Swedish young people have been sent abroad to take part in workshops together and looks for ways of combatting social exclusion, nationalism, right-wing radicalism and discrimination. An interactive photo exhibition was held in Genoa in July 2018, and young people and experts will be invited to an event in Berlin in early 2019.

Our Partner

Active in 14 countries, YEPP (Youth Empowerment Partnership Programme) is dedicated to supporting young people in socially disadvantaged communities, both with and without a migrant background. YEPP believes that in order for young people to become actors in creating positive social change, they must be allowed to develop their skills and be offered opportunities for exchange and stimulation.

Centro studi MEDÌ. Migrazioni nel Mediterraneo, an independent research centre based in Genoa, researches and works on migration dynamics and the changes they bring about in Italy and Europe.
