The German Film Office is pleased to present the documentary Zuhur’s Daughters as its German Movie Nights selection for Pride Month. The film will be available to stream across the United States.

After fleeing the war in Syria, teenage siblings Lohan and Samar and their family of 14 settle in Germany where they find a new freedom to express themselves as transgender. As they experiment with makeup and hair styles, the girls emerge into their new world with radiant and soaring sprits—but under the surface, layers of conflict, prejudice, and despair simmer. Directors Laurentia Genske and Robin Humboldt follow the young women over three years, revealing the challenges Lohan and Samar face between their family and their desire to live authentically. The familial bonds are strong but the parents feel the pressure of their own religious and cultural beliefs. While Zuhur and Talib remain caught between their faith and their fear of judgment by their watchful neighbors, their daughters negotiate their new identities as they grow up and find a place for themselves in society.

World premiere: DOK.fest Munich

“The film is a sensitive statement for tolerance, depressing and cheerful at the same time.” (Bernhard Blöchl, Süddeutsche Zeitung)
